ATO Audio Recommended Service Products

These are tools, supplies, and cleaning products that I personally recommend for vintage audio repair, restoration, troubleshooting, and general electronics work. Many of these are the same types of products I use on the ATO Audio workbench.

Soldering and Desoldering Station — Highly Recommended

One of my highly recommended tools for anyone doing vintage audio repair.

A quality soldering and desoldering station can make a huge difference when rebuilding vintage receivers and amplifiers. Having both soldering and powered desoldering capabilities makes removing old capacitors, transistors, diodes, resistors, and other through-hole components much faster and easier while helping reduce the chance of damaging fragile circuit board traces and pads.

This is especially useful for full recap projects, transistor replacements, protection board rebuilds, power supply work, and other component-level repairs.

Wire Wrap Tool

A useful tool for working with wire-wrap posts and delicate vintage audio wiring where careful removal or adjustment may be needed. Vintage Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz, and many other receivers commonly use wire-wrap connections throughout the chassis.

Switch Cleaner

Recommended for cleaning oxidized switches, selector controls, tape monitor switches, speaker switches, and other mechanical contacts commonly found in vintage receivers and amplifiers.

Dirty or oxidized switches are one of the most common causes of intermittent channels, distorted audio, and signal dropouts in vintage equipment.

Important Use Note

Always use cleaners sparingly and only on appropriate components. Avoid spraying cleaner on dial scales, painted surfaces, tuner components, plastics that may be sensitive to solvents, or areas where residue could cause damage. Allow adequate drying time before applying power.

When soldering or desoldering vintage circuit boards, use appropriate temperatures and avoid applying heat to a pad or trace longer than necessary. Older circuit boards can be much easier to damage than modern boards, particularly if they have previously been repaired.
